Beyond Black and White: Affirmative Action in America (A Fred Friendly Seminar)

Contending views on the issue of affirmative action face off in Beyond Black and White: Affirmative Action in America, the latest special from the prestigious Fred Friendly Seminars. Professor Charles Ogletree of Harvard Law School moderates a highly diverse panel of prominent guests as they search for both answers and commonality within this deeply complex, controversial and emotional topic.Using the Fred Friendly Seminars' trademark Socratic Dialogue format in which panelists role-play in hypothetical situations, Professor Ogletree guides the group through scenarios that demand real-world thought, understanding and answers. The Hypothetical ScenarioIt's the time of year when Big State University, the most prestigious state school in the state of Westrailia and one of the top 20 schools in the country, sends out its acceptance and rejection letters. As always, the school has tried to bring together a student body of diverse backgrounds, from different parts of the state, and roughly balanced between women and men. But of all the factors the school takes into consideration, one seems to have a special hold on the attention of the anxious high school seniors and their parents: race. And as the new freshmen enter the Big State campus, they find the parents of an unsuccessful applicant gathering signatures for an initiative that would eliminate all preferences based on race, ethnicity or sex in all state employment, education or contracting. The scenario branches out, with the moderator and panelists examining other issues, including outreach and employment practices in corporations, and the experience of the United States Army. The PanelistsLieutenant General Julius W. Biography - Frederick Douglass (A&E DVD Archives)

Frederick Douglass, the self-taught orator, writer, and abolitionist who was born a slave in the South and made a brave escape to the North, was in the words of one historian: "A major figure in the coming of the Civil War, and the way the Civil War was fought. I think you can say he was the conscience of the nation." Douglass campaigned Lincoln to free the slaves and allow African Americans to serve in the nation's army. An early proponent of women's rights, he campaigned for equal rights for all people and he served as America's first African American statesman when he was appointed diplomat to Haiti. He continued his public-speaking engagements up to his death in 1895 at the age of 78. The comments and analyses of numerous historians and excerpts from the writings and speeches of Douglass present a man driven by a dream, and who worked to make that dream a reality to the end of his days. With no contemporaries alive to comment on the private man, and only brief autobiographical excerpts included from his own works, this portrait tends to simplify the controversies of his life (his second marriage to a white woman rocked even the "liberal" North) and deify the man, but few Americans deserve such tribute more than Frederick Douglass. --Sean Axmaker

Hebrew or the So-Called Negro?

Shalom Shalom, The purpose of this DVD is to educate, alert, and motivate the children of Yah to see and perceive, to hear and understand, and understand and then apply His most powerful and redeeming word. I have put together a tremendous amount of information that will challenge and hopefully motivate you to seek the Almighty Yah so that He can transform you into whom you really are in Him. My friends, we are living in the last days of mankind as we know it. This land we call America is in the eye of the hurricane for it is also the creator of the storm. The soul of the so-called Negro lays buried in the grave of ignorance and void of the truth of Yah's word. We have embraced a world that has embraced demons and the doctrines of Devils. This DVD will show with all evidence that the so called Negros are the lost children of Israel proclaimed in the bible. Shalom -Yahya Bandele - A.K.A. Mark E. Copeland

The Story of Jazz (Masters of American Music)

Produced as the title segment to a six-part series, this 90-minute documentary traces the evolution of jazz from its 19th-century origins in New Orleans's Congo Square, where slaves first introduced American listeners to the complex rhythms and earthy textures of African music. How that cultural diaspora combined with European and American folk, classical, and popular styles to become jazz, "America's classical music," is an oft-told tale, but it's handsomely served here by an intelligent script shaped by veteran jazz journalist Chris Albertson, and a well-chosen array of performances: Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Lunceford, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and Gil Evans all appear, representing as complete a pantheon of major innovators and influences as could be hoped for. Period footage, including both stills and rare film clips, and interviews with musicians and scholars round out a portrait equally appropriate for hard-core jazz fans and novice listeners looking for a point of entry. --Sam Sutherland

A gothic tale becomes all too shockingly real in this mesmerizing magnum opus by the acclaimed author of FEED.It sounds like a fairy tale. He is a boy dressed in silks and white wigs and given the finest of classical educations. Raised by a group of rational philosophers known only by numbers, the boy and his mother — a princess in exile from a faraway land — are the only persons in their household assigned names. As the boy's regal mother, Cassiopeia, entertains the house scholars with her beauty and wit, young Octavian begins to question the purpose behind his guardians' fanatical studies. Only after he dares to open a forbidden door does he learn the hideous nature of their experiments — and his own chilling role in them. Set against the disquiet of Revolutionary Boston, M. T. Anderson's extraordinary novel takes place at a time when American Patriots rioted and battled to win liberty while African slaves were entreated to risk their lives for a freedom they would never claim. The first of two parts, this deeply provocative novel reimagines the past as an eerie place that has startling resonance for readers today.

Chains

She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom. From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.
