NPR Driveway Moments for Dads: Radio Stories That Won't Let You Go

Humorous, touching stories from the National Public Radio archives that capture the essence of fatherhood. First, what's a "driveway moment"? It's when you're so captivated by a feature story you're hearing on NPR that you stay in your car to hear it to the end—even if you're sitting in your driveway with the motor running, groceries to unpack, and kids to feed. For years, listeners have written to NPR to describe such moments. The stories in this collection kept dads glued to their bucket seats. Now dad can listen again, at his own pace, to tales for and about fathers. Drawn from All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and other award-winning NPR programs, they include a humorous account of a father's habitual snoring, a dad's reflection on leading his son's boy scout troop, an insightful look at the challenges of being a teenage father, and a touching reminiscence about lessons that NPR host Scott Simon learned from his comedian father. Hosted by Simon, these stories are comforting, bittersweet, and everything in between.

NPR Driveway Moments All About Animals: Radio Stories That Won't Let You Go (Npr Driveway Moments)

Stories from the National Public Radio archives celebrate our relationship with our furry, feathered, and sometimes scaly friends. What’s a "driveway moment"? It's when you're so captivated by a story you're hearing on NPR that you stay in your car to hear it to the end—even if you're sitting in your driveway with the motor running. For years, listeners have written to NPR to describe such moments. Now animal lovers especially will want to make sure their tanks are full. Meet a dog who's addicted to toads, a chatty parrot who tells the truth, the Stupid Pet Tricks coordinator for the Late Show with David Letterman, and a professional dog walker whose day features 14 canines and a lot of fresh air. Learn about a dog's life in Vietnam (where dog meat is a delicacy) and the heartrending search for lost pets following Hurricane Katrina. Visit a retirement community for thoroughbred racehorses and the Wait Wait petting zoo, where cows moo with British accents and mice dislike cheese. Bid farewell to a cat named Miss Pudding and welcome three orphaned hummingbirds home. Heard on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, and Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me!, hosted by Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, these stories will make you laugh out loud and shed a tear or two.

Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!

The first audio collection from NPR’s “oddly informative news quiz” spotlights the “Not My Job” segment of the show, with celebrity guests including Tom Hanks, Terry Gross, Jeopardy Grand Champion Ken Jennings, and Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Each week, 2 million listeners tune into Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, the hour-long news quiz from NPR and Chicago Public Radio. They test their knowledge of the week’s dumbest news against some of the best and brightest in the news and entertainment world. Host Peter Sagal and scorekeeper (and veteran NPR newscaster) Carl Kasell join panelists including author and humorist Roy Blount Jr., Washington Post columnist Roxanne Roberts, Boston Globe writer Charlie Pierce, and comedian Paula Poundstone. Always a high point of the show, the “Not My Job” segment features a celebrity guest who must answer three questions on a topic totally outside his or her area of expertise. Nice guy Tom Hanks is asked about Hollywood’s biggest louts. Magician Penn Jillette can’t escape three questions about Ben Franklin. Jeopardy Grand Champion Ken Jennings is almost (but not quite) stumped by “What in the world does Ken Jennings not know?” And Barack Obama, Democratic Senator from Illinois, takes the floor for three questions about the superstitions of Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs. Introduced by Sagal, with hilarious interjections from panel members, the first-ever Wait Wait audio is fast paced, funny—and oddly informative. Celebrity Guests: Tom Hanks Terry Gross Sarah Silverman Ken Jennings Penn Gillette Barack Obama Major Robert Bateman Harold Ramis Janeane Garofalo Panelists Adam Felber Roy Blount, Jr. Paula Poundstone Mo Rocca Amy Dickinson Roxanne Roberts Tom Bodett Kyrie O'Connor Charlie Pierce Ahmer Haleem

Spirit of the Mountains: Millennium : A Photographic Celebration of Mountains and Climbing

BOOK SPIRIT OF THE MOUNTAINS

Portraits

Magnum photographer Steve McCurry never set out to take portraits. Critically acclaimed and recognized internationally for his classic reportage, over the last 20 years he has worked for the "National Geographic" and other publications on numerous assignments: along the Afghan border, in Baghdad, Beirut and the Sahel. McCurry's coverage of the monsoon won first prize in the World Press Awards, and was part of his portfolio when he was named Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1984. In 1985, McCurry photographed an Afghan girl for the "National Geographic". The intensity of the subject's eyes and her compelling gaze made this one of contemporary photography's most celebrated and best-known portraits. McCurry is now equally famous for his other portrayals of memorable faces that he has encountered while travelling throughout the world. Compelling, unforgettable and moving, McCurry's images are unique street portraits: unstylized and unposed snapshots of people that reveal the universality of human emotion.

(un)FASHION

This witty and eye-popping book-a delightfully unconventional view of contemporary fashion as seen in the creative ways that people around the globe adorn their bodies-is the brainchild of graphic designer Tibor Kalman, who had finished the picture selection and design when he died in May 1999. Completed by his wife and partner in M&Co, noted children's book author Maira Kalman, (un)Fashion will startle, amuse, engross, and enchant as it adds posthumously to Tibor Kalman's reputation as one of the graphic design geniuses of the 20th century. From cardboard shoes in Africa to body paint in New Guinea, from chimney sweeps in France to an Indian Elvis, (un)Fashion scans the globe to show how real people dress: at work, on the street, or for ceremonial occasions. With virtually no text, (un)Fashion pokes gentle fun at the elitism of the fashion world, presenting its provocative observations through dynamic images by some of the world's foremost photojournalists. TIBOR KALMAN (1949-1999), one of the world's greatest graphic designers and a social activist, founded the revolutionary New York design firm M&Co, known for its use of graphics for social commentary as well as for innovation in design. MAIRA KALMAN is the author/illustrator of 10 children's books, including the celebrated series about the globe-trotting poet dog Max Stravinsky. Kalman continues to run M&Co. She lives in New York City with her two children 285 illustrations in full color, 6 x 9"

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream (Vintage)

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World

How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most. As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.
