Beyond Wall Street - Episodes 1 & 2: Growth Equities Investing & Value Equities Investing (The Art of Investing)

In this pair of programs from the PBS series Beyond Wall Street: The Art of Investing, two prominent money managers with different approaches to the market speak at some length about their strategies. Foster Friess, the manager of the Brandywine mutual funds, is the epitome of the growth investor. Keeping an eye out for stocks that are hitting new highs as companies demonstrate robust growth, Friess and his research staff doggedly try to locate investment opportunities before they are widely recognized. While Friess distinguished himself by being able to identify rockets about to take off, mutual fund manager John Neff has made his mark by being a textbook value investor. Neff has typically looked for companies that have fallen out of favor yet have the potential to rebound dramatically. In a relaxed interview, Neff details the gutsy decision he made to aggressively buy the stock of Citibank in 1990 when the enormous financial services company was thought to be on the verge of ruin, and was thus very richly rewarded when Citibank turned around. Hosted by financial journalists Andrew Tobias and Jane Bryant Quinn, these programs are intelligently produced and provide instructive introductions to two major approaches of investing. --Robert J. McNamara

Beyond Wall Street - Episodes 3 & 4: Quantitative Investing & Indexing

These two programs, installments from the PBS series Beyond Wall Street: The Art of Investing, showcase two entirely different ways of picking stocks and also provide varying opinions on their effectiveness. The idea that a computer--actually roomfuls of computers--can pick stocks better than human analysts may seem ridiculous at first, but a visit to Barr Rosenberg makes it seem utterly sensible. A manager of mutual funds, Rosenberg uses "quantitative analysis" to track the movements of stocks and identify optimum times to buy and sell. His staff, seated at banks of computers, not only crunch numbers about stocks, but even track the habits of other money managers in an attempt to "trade ahead of sentiment." Journalist Andrew Tobias is skeptical, but his visit to Rosenberg raises fascinating questions about a radical approach to stock picking. Another strategy is personified by Bill Sharpe, a proponent of index funds who also happens to be the winner of a Nobel Prize. Index funds reflect the movement of a particular segment of the entire market, and Sharpe makes the case that indexing is more reliable than picking individual stocks; he recommends it as a "boring way to get rich." Hosted by journalists Tobias and Jane Bryant Quinn, these programs offer an insightful look at how alert minds have found new angles to divine the movements of the market. --Robert J. McNamara

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

One of the greatest scandals in American corporate history is chronicled in the riveting documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. Based on the bestselling book by Fortune magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkin, and directed by Alex Gibney (who also produced The Trials of Henry Kissinger), the film is an epic morality tale, drawing upon a wealth of insider interviews and archival material to show how Enron, once the nation's seventh largest corporate entity, essentially faked its bookkeeping to report profits that never existed. The corrupt and closely-guarded mismanagement by Enron executives (including Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, later placed on criminal trial) is revealed through such heinous concepts as "Hypothetical Future Value" (a way of reaping fortunes based on false profit projections) and the use of offshore "shell" companies to hide the massive losses that eventually toppled the company (along with the venerable Arthur Anderson accounting firm) and left 20,000 employees jobless. As a maddening portrait of hubris and white-collar crime, Enron transcends political and corporate boundaries by showing how smart and powerful men grew blinded by greed and brought ruin upon themselves, along with thousands of otherwise innocent victims. For better and worse, it's a perfect double-feature with eye-opening 2004 documentary The Corporation. --Jeff Shannon

I Think I Love My Wife

Chris Rock's loose remake of 1972's Chloe In the Afternoon, the latter an entry in French New Wave genius Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales cycle, is a half-silly, half-starchy adult comedy about a buttoned-up money manager, Richard Cooper (Rock), whose staid life at home has worn down his sexual vitality. With two kids and a somewhat joyless wife (Gina Torres), Richard's mind wanders on the job, on the train, virtually anywhere a restless husband can spot beautiful, unattainable women. Still, no harm done, until old friend Nikki (Kerry Washington) shows up in his office, wanting his support and counsel and friendship every minute over subsequent weeks. The two stay out of the sack, which makes it possible for them to be honest with one another. Nikki criticizes Richard for being in what appears to be a loveless relationship, bled dry of passion. Richard calls out Nikki for being flighty, unwilling to commit to anything. As the relationship wears on, Richard's world is upended, and the havoc takes a toll on his family life and productivity. It's at this point where the film, co-adapted for the screen and directed by Rock, paints itself into a corner, with few interesting alternatives for a way out of Richard's dilemma that feel authentic or, for that matter, funny. A Viagra-inspired visual joke (gee, hard to imagine what that could be) is a crass gift to audience members growing suspicious that Rock has lured them into a chick flick. A soul duet between Rock and Torres appears out of nowhere and throws the emotional balance off at a crucial moment. This kind of thing makes one wonder how seriously Rock took his own project, yet there are signs that he--a very funny and intelligent talent--has a different kind of movie in him. Jokes about Michael Jackson, race, and even racially-slanted comedy are peppered throughout I Think I Love My Wife, harmless distractions in context, yet suggestive of a different kind of movie satire waiting to come out of Rock. --Tom KeoghBeyond I Think I Love My WifeChris Rock DVDsDirectors Starring in Their Own MoviesAfrican-American CinemaStills from I Think I Love My Wife

Killing Sacred Cows: Overcoming the Financial Myths That Are Destroying Your Prosperity

Our culture is riddled with destructive myths about money and prosperity that are severely limiting the power, creativity, and financial potential of individuals. In Killing Sacred Cows, Garrett B. Gunderson boldly exposes ingrained fallacies and misguided traditions in the world of personal finance. He presents a revolutionary perspective that can create unprecedented opportunity and wealth for thoughtful, mission-driven individuals. Our financial lives are intimately connected to our societal contributions, and we must be financially free in order to achieve our fullest potential. Sadly, however, most people are held captive in their financial lives by misinformation, propaganda, and limited knowledge. Through well-reasoned arguments, unflinching logic, and revelatory insight, Gunderson defeats common clichés and faulty retirement planning advice to plainly demonstrate the following and much more: 401(k)s and the stock market are the most risky investments for most people and the gambling mindset they induce creates disastrous consequences.Conventional retirement planning advice, products, strategies, and techniques expose you to significant danger of being unable to retire, or of running out of money prematurely if you do.Building net worth is a recipe for creating a life of fear and poverty and how to escape that common trap.Debt may not be what you think it is and why that matters to your prosperity. 'High risk equals high returns' is destructive dogma and how reducing risk can increase your returns.Killing Sacred Cows is a must-read for brave individuals willing to question common assumptions and teachings, overcome the herd mentality, break through financial myths, and live a purposeful, passionate, and prosperous life.
