Progressive bluegrass featuring blazing instrumental work along with soulful vocals from an incredibly talented young band. This is the stunning debut album from the up and coming newgrass band The Student Loan. Based out of Bowling Green, Ohio this group of young classically trained musicians has come together in their freshman effort to record an album that is exceptional in its musical breadth and vision. From catchy choruses to driving instrumentals The Student Loan pay homage to traditional bluegrass while frequent meter changes and extended jam sessions reflect the influence of jazz, classical, and jam band music. Formed in the spring of 2005, The Student Loan synthesizes a wide array of musical styles and backgrounds. Guitarist, fiddler, and singer Liz Chibucos is a classically trained composer and violinist, who also has a background as a classical and jazz pianist. West Virginian Chad Kimbler, the groups mandolinist, recently completed his masters degree in music composition. In addition to playing the mandolin, Kimbler was formerly the Principal Second Violinist in the West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra and the former drummer for the Morgantown, West Virginia based group, The Sundowners. Banjo player Mark Gerolami comes from a background in music education and ethnomusicology and is the former singer and guitarist for the Bowling Green based band, Norton and The Anthologies. Bringing to the table a background in musicology and jazz studies and rounding out The Student Loan is bassist Julio Appling, former leader of the Harlequin Jazz Quartet and member of the Southern California progressive rock group Oneiria.1 Intro 2 Campbell Hill Backstep 3 The Blarney Inn 4 Don't Bring Me Down 5 Buffalo Gals 6 The Clough Street Turnaround 7 Rufus 8 Out of Sight 9 Gypsy Batwing 10 The Serpents of Paradise 11 Eye of the Storm 12 Down To 13 Outro

The Student Loan's newest album, A New and Different Life, looks back upon their experiences living in Ohio and forward to the unknown as they turn to a new chapter in their lives. These clever and original songwriters reveal a quirky view of contemporary life using humor, wit, skepticism, and insight. From the stresses of a factory job, to the whimsical nature of man's best friend; from the heartbreak of a lost love, to frustration with those in power, this album is a must-have for anyone searching for a fresh take on songwriting and instrumental style.
Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon
Along with Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow launched a new fusion of comedy and kung fu. And it's easy to see why Snake has been so popular--it's easily the most engaging of Jackie Chan's early films. Everyone abuses and humiliates a downtrodden orphan (Chan) until he befriends an old man, who turns out to be the last master of the "snake fist" fighting style. Jackie becomes the old man's student and finds himself in battle with the master of the "eagle's claw" style, who has vowed to destroy the snake fist clan. Though these plot elements are familiar stuff, they're all executed with outstanding verve; the performances, the fight choreography, and even the obligatory training sequence are unusually complex and well filmed. Jackie is in top form and coming into his own as a star. --Bret Fetzer
Once upon a time in the hood "Boyz N the Hood" meets "Blood In, Blood Out" in this gritty tale of life on the streets of East L.A. Danny (Jacob Vargas), Alfonso (Greg Serano) and Raymo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) are lifelong friends who have spent their days hanging out and playing basketball. But everything is about to change...when one of them gets involved with a dangerous drug dealer, all their lives are at risk and they must make some life and death decisions.
"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.... When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out."Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus--three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up.Like the slow-moving occupants of her fictional town, Lee takes her time getting to the heart of her tale; we first meet the Finches the summer before Scout's first year at school. She, her brother, and Dill Harris, a boy who spends the summers with his aunt in Maycomb, while away the hours reenacting scenes from Dracula and plotting ways to get a peek at the town bogeyman, Boo Radley. At first the circumstances surrounding the alleged rape of Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a drunk and violent white farmer, barely penetrate the children's consciousness. Then Atticus is called on to defend the accused, Tom Robinson, and soon Scout and Jem find themselves caught up in events beyond their understanding. During the trial, the town exhibits its ugly side, but Lee offers plenty of counterbalance as well--in the struggle of an elderly woman to overcome her morphine habit before she dies; in the heroism of Atticus Finch, standing up for what he knows is right; and finally in Scout's hard-won understanding that most people are essentially kind "when you really see them." By turns funny, wise, and heartbreaking, To Kill a Mockingbird is one classic that continues to speak to new generations, and deserves to be reread often. --Alix Wilber
